Measles is extremely contagious and is transmitted via respiratory aerosols that remain infectious and a risk to others for up to 30 mins after the person has left the area. It may take around 10 days (range is 7 - 18 days) before symptoms occur and around 14 days before a rash appears. The infectious period is 24 hours PRIOR to symptoms until 4 days AFTER the onset of the rash.

Symptoms:

  • Rash
  • Fever (at the same time as the rash)
  • Cough
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Inflammed/Runny Nose

What to do:

  • Contact your GP, NOTIFYING reception of suspected measles
    • A home visit is preferred
    • If not possible, do not use the waiting room. Ensure you are isolated!
  • ISOLATE from EVERYTHING (e.g. school/childcare/visitors/non-household family members) until it has been 4 days POST rash appearance
  • Ensure all household members are IMMUNISED
