Oakden Medical Centre supports the local involvement of men with this great initiative. Dr Chris Bollen, one of our GPs, attended the launch on Saturday February 8th.
The Mens Shed project at Enfield is one of 1100 across Australia, and it is Adelaide’s most recent addition to the Mens Shed community. A group of committed people have managed to get a grant and to involve the Port Adelaide Enfield Council in the project. The new venue is at the Enfield Community centre on Regency road.
So why is Oakden Medical centre supporting the project? It’s because older men (over 65) have a higher rate of loneliness than others. And loneliness as an impact on health and wellness is just as big a risk factor as smoking!! Men getting together and working on projects large and small helps with social connectedness, sparking friendship groups, achievement, purpose in life, and fun. Remember laughter is the best medicine, and getting together around the work bench, the tea urn or the community speaker triggers chat and banter and involves people. This is the heart of our community and as a GP, I see this is what underpins a “Healthy and Happy Community”, which is the Oakden and Windsor Medical Centre’s purpose.

Have a skin check or review your immunisations, especially with the current #coronavirus concerns, the pneumonia vaccine which is free for all men over 65 is currently available.
