Anzac Day is the time of year that we recognise those members of the community, past and present, who have served Australia in military uniform. Since the 1950s RAAF Edinburgh has been an important part of the northern Adelaide community, being the home of the Maritime Patrol Group and numerous research and development units.  More recently the move of the Australian Army 7th Battalion to Edinburgh has expanded the Defence presence in the area. Many of these Australian Defence Force uniform personnel, civilian employees and contractors and their families live in the northern and northeastern suburbs.

Military life presents some unique challenges for both serving members and their families. The transition from military back to civilian life can be just as challenging. This can be especially so when a member discharges with medical issues that require ongoing care. For these members it can be important to have a smooth transition from Defence medical to civilian care, and to develop a network of services to assist.

All ex-ADF personnel are entitled to a funded health assessment on discharge, called the "ADF Post Discharge Health Assessment". This is an initiative that gives the ex-member's new GP an opportunity to better assess and assist with health issues. It specifically covers conditions that have a much higher rate in the ex-service community than the general community, such as noise-related hearing loss and certain mental health issues. The ADF Post Discharge Health Assessment is not just for recently discharged personnel - anyone who has served in uniform at any stage is entitled to one of these assessments.

If you are recently discharged from the ADF and looking for assistance with the health aspects of civilian life, we can help.
